Nature in the City

Baltimore Woods' Nature in the City program brings authentic, hands-on/minds-on natural science learning to K-6th grade urban school children. Now in its ninth year with the Syracuse City School District, and in its pilot year with the Auburn City School District, this award winning program is better than ever. Nature in the City lessons provide relevant, meaningful and fun ways to learn science. Each participating classroom receives a series of three lessons with a common learning objective and theme. The hour-long lessons are tied to the New York State Science Standards and have been tailored to support the Elementary Science Core Curriculum. Nature in the City lessons support teachers and enhance the science being taught in the classroom.

STEM-Engineering Career Event

The MOST and PEB create interest and excitement in a wide variety of STEM careers. To provide high school (possibly middle school also) students with an awareness of the many businesses, organizations, government agencies, programs of higher learning within CNY that employ/offer training of STEM careers.

Project Lead the Way (RIT)

Students develop critical thinking skills through hands-on project-based learning. The program engages students on multiple levels, exposes them to subjects that they typically would not pursue, provides them with a strong foundation for achieving their academic goals in any chosen field of study and, if pursued, establishes a proven path to college and career success in STEM related industries.

This program takes students through the discovery, development and marketing of a pharmaceutical drug. A trans disciplinary approach involves biology, chemistry, general science, math, language arts, ethics, social studies, business and marketing. Scientific machinery is used from local universities. Students tour Bristol's research facilituies and have the opportunity to present their final projects to Bristol industry professionals.

National Engineers Week

National Engineers week always falls during CNY winter break so Lockheed Martin sets up projects, lessons and demonstrations at the MOST every year during one of their busiest weeks.

Literacy Design Collaborative

The program helps train content area teachers to implement the Common Core Standards across all content areas. The LDC Modules focus on specific teaching tasks that increase and embed literacy skills and help students to become prepared for the rigors of college. View more information.

Teacher in the Workplace

Provide teachers with an inside look at a business/workplace that employs people working in STEM fields/careers.  Goals include job profiling, identifying and assessing the skills used in each job, observing the job(s) being performed, taking back to the classroom a project or lesson plan that can be shared in the classroom and with other teachers.

Spring Greening Teacher Conference

The greatest impact of this program will result from the multiplier effect created by "training the trainers", preparing them to deliver curriculum on environmental issues that meet the specific needs of their classrooms and school communities. This was accomplished by providing teachers with the knowledge, community connections, and materials necessary to establish long-term, hands-on projects that both directly reduce waste and pollution and foster lifelong environmental stewardship habits in students, such as knowing how and what to recycle, conserving water and energy by forming new habits, and composting at school and at home. Spring Greening mainly focused on pollution prevention and environmental conservation through sustainable materials management and green infrastructure; however, many additional sustainability topics were be addressed through various sessions, exhibits, and site tours, such as green building, climate change, energy conservation, and renewable energy. Additionally, as a direct result of workshops provided during this training, CSCS was able to assist teachers in establishing up to 42 rain barrel and  compost tumbler demonstration projects at their school.

ESF in the High School

A school/college partnership program that enables qualified students to: Experience college-level course work while still in high school; understand the complex scientific and social perspectives behind the environmental issues that make headlines every day such as, the relationship between energy use and the environment; and learn about and explore diverse interests and career opportunities in environmental science, engineering management, policy and design - and in related areas such as law, communications, technology and medicine. LCS-SRC Engineering Ambassadors Program

The LCS-SRC Engineering Ambassadors Program was created in the spring of 2006 with the goal of establishing a foundational understanding of math and science among Syracuse City School District middle school students. The program, funded by SRC, Inc, is devised to help young students understand the different fields of science and engineering and how they affect everyday life.

The members of the program consist of middle school SCSD students and students from the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science under the direction of the Mary Ann Shaw Center for Public and Community Service at Syracuse University. The mission of the LCS-SRC Engineering Ambassadors program is to spark a lasting passion in science and technology early in the lives of these middle school students, with the ultimate effect being a desire to pursue those interests into high school and beyond.

Corporate Campus Academic Mentoring Program

Inner-city middle school students matched with mentor. Work on math homework and traditional mentoring. Goals are to help students improve math scores, learn from mentor in STEM career and to instill good study habits. Students will be matched up with an employee of one of several different companies including Lockheed Martin, SRC Inc. and O'Brien & Gere.

CNY STEM Scholars Program

The SRC STEM Scholars Program was designed in conjunction with the CNY STEM Hub to support Central New York students who plan to pursue a college degree in a field related to science, technology, engineering or mathematics.

Scholarships will be presented to four graduating seniors each year. The scholarships are for $2,500 a year for four years ($10,000 total). The program is administered by SRC and the CNY STEM Hub.

As part of the program, SRC STEM Scholars will also be guaranteed an internship at SRC after their sophomore and junior years of college if they maintain program eligibility.
